Thomas Partey's Arsenal fall short of Premier League title despite victory over Everton
19th May 2024
Arsenal's hopes of clinching their first Premier League title since 2004 were dashed despite a hard-fought victory against Everton, as Manchester City claimed the glory.
To be crowned champions, the Gunners needed to beat the Toffees and hope City failed to win against West Ham.
Arsenal faced a setback when Idrissa Gueye's deflected free-kick put Everton in front, but Takehiro Tomiyasu equalized three minutes later.
While Arsenal eventually held up their end of the bargain with Kai Havertz's late winner, City's victory over West Ham ultimately took matters out of their hands.
Phil Foden's early double for City at Etihad Stadium effectively ended the lingering hopes Arsenal had of securing the title after a 20-year drought.
Despite dominating in north London, Arsenal were frustrated as Everton took the lead.
After Thomas Partey fouled Dwight McNeil 25 yards out, Gueye's free-kick took a huge deflection off Declan Rice's forehead and flew into the net past the wrong-footed David Raya.
Arsenal responded quickly, with Tomiyasu equalizing with a fine low finish from the edge of the area following a pull-back from Martin Odegaard.
In the second half, Havertz and Emile Smith Rowe both struck the woodwork, as belief visibly drained from the team at the end of a long, losing battle for silverware.
Arsenal did find the winner, though, in controversial circumstances. After Havertz tucked the ball in from close range, the video assistant referee recommended disallowing the goal for a Gabriel Jesus handball in the build-up.
However, after reviewing the footage at the side of the pitch, referee Michael Oliver allowed the goal to stand.
Thomas Partey, who was replaced by Emile Smith Rowe in the 69th minute, endured an injury-ravaged campaign, making just 14 appearances.
Despite the individual challenges and the ultimate team disappointment, Partey and Arsenal will look to regroup and come back stronger next season.
