Founder and CEO of Reroy Group, an indigenous and fully Ghanaian owned cable manufacturing company, Kate Quartey-Papafio, has said women need to do more to take up key leadership roles.

Mrs Quartey-Papafio said despite the challenges women face in a male-dominated business environment, the achievements of some distinguished women suggest that women everywhere can excel in business even if they have to combine that with managing a home.

She spoke on the business edition of nightly current affairs programme, PM Express, on Thursday.

“The time has come for leaders to do more”, she said on the show that was dedicated to the International Women’s Day.

She admitted, however, that in male-dominated board rooms where women's views and suggestions can easily be ignored, women cultivate the boldness to rise above that challenge.

“Women must be on most boards and to take charge because we are capable,” admonished.

On International Women’s Day this year, the world is focusing on innovative ways in that can propel gender equality and the empowerment of women.

This year’s celebration is under the global theme “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change.”

The United Nations has said despite notable progress over the years, discriminatory social norms on gender continue to impact negatively on the lives of both women and men in Ghana.

“Women’s education and economic empowerment are too often compromised by lack of adequate and sustained opportunities, support, and investments. Child marriage and teenage pregnancy remain a critical barrier to girls’ continued education, skills development and full transition into employment. Ghanaian women constitute 70 % of the informal sector workforce and many are low-income earners with limited social security protection,” the UN in Ghana said in a press release to commemorate the event.

Data shows that women and girls spend significant time in care provision for children and the elderly, and in the performance of chores such as cooking, cleaning or fetching water and firewood for the household.

These notwithstanding, Mrs Kate Quartey-Papafio said “I would like to advise women, especially the entrepreneurs, that they should not be stagnant.

'They should take the boldness because it takes boldness for you to achieve; perseverance, sustainability and attention to details.”
