A violent head-on collision between a tipper truck and a fuel tanker on the Accra–Tema Motorway late Monday night has left one person dead and three others hospitalised, with the resulting inferno bringing one of the country’s busiest highway corridors to a standstill.

The crash occurred at approximately 23:49 hours between Saka Saka Park and Tanink Ghana, where the two heavy-duty vehicles collided with a force that immediately set the fuel tanker ablaze, sending flames leaping into the night sky and triggering a frantic emergency response.

Fire crews from the Motorway Fire Station led the initial response, backed by reinforcements from the Ashaiman and Tema Industrial Area Fire Stations and a water tanker from the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly.

Together, they battled the intense blaze fed by leaking fuel for several hours before bringing it fully under control — preventing what authorities say could have escalated into a catastrophic explosion along one of Ghana’s most heavily trafficked routes.

Three occupants rescued from the wreckage before fire crews arrived were rushed to the Tema General Hospital for emergency treatment. They have been identified as Kwabena Agyapong, Joseph Teye Quarshie and Aaron Kyei. Their current conditions have not yet been officially disclosed.

The fate of the tipper truck driver was far more grim. His charred remains were retrieved from the wreckage during recovery operations, confirming him as the sole fatality of the crash.

Cooling operations and scene management continued alongside police investigations in the aftermath of the fire, while traffic along the motorway, temporarily disrupted by the incident, has since been gradually restored.

The cause of the collision and subsequent fire remains under investigation as authorities work to piece together the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.
