The Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Command has arrested two persons who assisted in the assault of a Police Officer detailed to arrest a 29-year-old suspected armed robber, Godfred Amponsah, alias Mankuzu.

The two, Paa Kwasi, alias Medeim, 26 years and James Avuka, alias Fiego, aged 22 had been detained by the Command to assist in investigations while Amponsah who sustained gunshot wounds was on admission at the Sunyani Regional Hospital (SRH) receiving treatment.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the issue on Thursday in Sunyani, Chief Inspector Augustine Kingsley Oppong, the Regional Police Public Relations Officer stated that a complainant, name withheld lodged a complaint at the Sankore Police Station against Amponsah of robbery and raping on Sunday, August 12, 2018.

He said a Police Corporal was detailed to arrest him, but his accomplices assisted in beating the Officer and hit his head with stones.

Chief Inspector Oppong said when the Officer returned to the Police station and narrated his ordeal, reinforcement team was deployed to the area to effect the arrest of Amponsah and his accomplices.

But on arrival, the group threatened to kill the Officers and burn the Sankore Police Station in the Asunafo South District of Brong-Ahafo.

Consequently the group (robber and other gang members including the two Police assaulters) started shooting and in the process Amponsah sustained gunshot wounds on his right thigh and was rushed to the SRH, he added.

Chief Inspector Oppong assured that the place had since become calm and cautioned the youth in the area not to take the law into their own hands because the Police would not spare those who would try to disturb the peace in their communities.
