UCC appoints Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto as interim vice-chancellor
25th September 2025
The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has named its Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, as Interim Vice-Chancellor, in compliance with a directive from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
The decision was announced after an emergency meeting of the University’s Governing Council on September 24, 2025.
In a notice signed by Registrar and Secretary to Council, Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye, the University confirmed that the appointment was in line with GTEC’s instructions.
“Accordingly, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, is to act in the interim,” the statement read.
The leadership change follows GTEC’s order for former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, to vacate his position after reaching the compulsory retirement age of 60.
In a letter dated September 19, 2025, GTEC cited Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires public officers to retire at 60 unless otherwise provided by law.
The Commission also referenced the University of Cape Coast Act (PNDCL 278) and the University’s statutes, which set limits on tenure and uphold the constitutional retirement provision.
Although the case is currently before the Cape Coast High Court, GTEC has instructed that no substantive appointment be made until the matter is legally resolved.
UCC’s Governing Council assured staff, students, and stakeholders that academic and administrative activities remain stable. Prof. Aheto will oversee the institution’s affairs until a final determination is made.
