The Volta Youth in Agriculture (VYA) has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his initiative to distribute three million coconut seedlings to farmers across the country, describing it as a major boost to Ghana’s agricultural sector.
In a statement to the Ghana News Agency, the group’s Public Relations Officer, Madam Joy Mawutor Fiamawle, expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting that it would significantly enhance the livelihoods of coconut farmers and contribute to the sustainability and growth of the sector.
“With about 700 coconut trees already on our farm in the region and more expected soon, this nationwide distribution will greatly support the sector and lead to a bountiful harvest for the nation,” Madam Fiamawle said.
She noted that the initiative has renewed the group’s determination to advance agriculture in unity and with a sense of purpose. “It has instilled hope and optimism among our members, and we are eager to work together to ensure its success,” she added.
Madam Fiamawle urged the government to provide further support and ensure the sustainability of this initiative. She also called on other stakeholders to join hands in promoting Ghana’s agricultural development.
VYA currently has about 166 members, comprising agro-chemists, entrepreneurs, and experienced farmers. According to Madam Fiamawle, the group is confident the seedling distribution will not only improve farmers’ incomes but also boost national coconut production.
She revealed that the association’s farm is strategically located at Tokorkoe in the Volta Region, close to the regional capital, Ho—an ideal location that provides easy access for farmers seeking seedlings and technical support from VYA members.
Plans are also underway to establish additional coconut farms in other districts across the Volta Region in the coming years. She commended farmers in Anlo-Afiadenyigba in the Keta Municipality for their role in making quality seedlings available for sale, enabling wider access across the region.
Madam Fiamawle described VYA as a dynamic group of young farmers dedicated to transforming their communities and contributing to national development through agriculture. She emphasised that President Mahama’s coconut initiative has brought a renewed sense of purpose to the group.
The Ghana News Agency also noted that the successful implementation of the free seedling distribution programme will depend on strong collaboration between government, farmers, and other industry players. Stakeholder support, the report said, is crucial to ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of the initiative.
