"We need to take a second look at the relevance of writing the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) . . . We need to take a second look at BECE . . . BECE should not be the terminating point, the terminating point should be at the age of 18. We want a placement exam, not a terminal exam," according to the Minister of Education, Matthew Opoku Prempeh popularly known as Napo.

He was speaking on the adverse effects of the global COVID-19 on Ghana's education in the wake of President Akufo-Addo's directive that all schools should close down.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has suspended this year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) over the coronavirus outbreak.

Some parents have wondered the future of the candidates since no one knows when the pandemic will come to an end.

Napo, who was speaking in a one-on-one interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo' said, he has asked the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) to collaborate with authorities of the Universities on how to admit the students without writing an exam.

"If students don’t write exams Ghana will not collapse . . . I have asked NCTE to liaise with the Vice-chancellors and registrars to strategise how they can admit the students without writing the exams. If we engage the universities they can give us so many options," the Education Minister stated.
