New Zealand side Wellington Phoenix have ruled out a potential move for Former Chelsea star Michael Essien.

The former Blues midfielder has been unattached since leaving Indonesian top-flight side Persib.

He was declared surplus to requirements following the arrival of two foreign players.

While an attractive prospect for a club struggling for crowds, Wellington's general manager David Dome has denied interest in the 35 year old.

The Ghanian international spent most of his club career at Chelsea, but has also had short stints with Real Madrid, AC Milan and Panathinaikos.

New Wellington coach Mark Rudan has had a busy off-season to date bringing in a number of players including former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor - Essien however, doesn't appear to be on his radar.
