The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, has announced a new policy vision for Ghana: Free University Education.

Speaking at the campaign launch in the Subin Constituency, chairman Wontumi revealed that the policy would be introduced if the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, wins the upcoming December election.

Chairman Wontumi declared that Dr. Bawumia’s government would enable students to gain university admission with only their Ghana Card, an initiative that would eliminate financial barriers to higher education in the country.

During the campaign event, chairman Wontumi appealed to voters across political lines, urging them to support the NPP to secure and preserve the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme.

He argued that the programme, currently benefiting thousands of students, is at risk under an opposition government.

Citing examples, chairman Wontumi claimed the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has a record of scrapping policies, referencing the free maternal healthcare component of the National Health Insurance Scheme introduced by former President John Kufuor, which he says was later canceled by the NDC.

Chairman Wontumi also questioned the NDC’s commitment to sustaining current development projects in the Ashanti Region.

According to the Ashanti Regional NPP chairman, former President Mahama’s return to office would only be to “embezzle state resources,” claiming that Mr. Mahama would dedicate two years to investigating the previous administration, one year to development, and another to seizing state resources.

Additionally, chairman Wontumi alleged that retired Commissioner of Police (COP) Kofi Boakye was planning to train NDC members in the Ashanti Region ahead of the December polls, warning that he would be held accountable for any election-related violence.

The NPP’s Parliamentary Candidate for Subin, Lawyer Kofi Obiri Yeboah, further rallied the constituency, urging voters to turn out in record numbers to secure a decisive victory for Dr. Bawumia.

He noted that the party aims for a 90 per cent vote share in the constituency, calling on supporters to “vote massively for progress and continuity.”
