Zongo Women Achievers Network (ZWAN) on Sunday   distributed packs of food and drinks worth over 1300 Ghc to  the inmates of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

The occasion also saw the women advocacy group  donating food packs to the  kids ward of the hospital, making an event dubbed “ONE INMATE, ONE PAPAYE” a success.

To the  inmates both young and old, the donation served as a wish come true for them as they could be seen  jumping and laughing when they saw the visitors carrying the package into the ward.

The leader of the organization, Hajar Diko Osman, making the presentation on behalf of the Women's Ministry said, the gesture was to make the inmates feel happy as the organisation aims at bringing joy into the lives of the inmates.

"ZWAN wants to make these sisters of our happy, we want them to feel they are  still part of us  and we are acutely aware of their conditions here," she said.

"Life has it ups and downs and being here doesn't make them  societal misfits. You may be of sound health today and by accident find yourself here tomorrow. So we believe it is the little care we show to them can contribute to their cure. You could see that it was no secret that these women needed support and love to lessen their plight which ZWAN has provided."

ZWAN is a newly established organization that seeks to celebrate outstanding women who are making impact in their chosen field of endeavor by serving as an agent of change in the society. And it aims at inspiring young generation to emulate these change makers.

ZWAN aims at caring for the wellbeing of children and women and also to draw programs enhancing the economic and social development of women by visiting schools to educate them on the importance of education and taking up leadership roles wherever they find themselves.
Thanks to our contributors, May the Lord increase you in wealth.

The "ONE INMATE, ONE PAPAYE" event , according madam Hajar ,  is just one out of many projects that the organisation is bringing out to ensure its aim to empower women is brought to fruition.

Speaking to ghanaguardian.com  after the donation, the young  philanthropist said: "We have done a lot of research concerning this area of empowering women. There is the cultural challenges, it is about the lack of  support from society and our inability as women to stand up get counted. We need to change that mindset. It is ingrained in some of our women and it will take time to get that out of them"

These challenges exist in our 'Zongos' just as it exists in other part of the country. It is my fervent prayer that we can garner all the support to reduce the plight of women in our society.May the Lord increase you in wealth. Ameen," she added.

The 1,300ghc worth of donation came from    contributions from family and friends and other benevolent institutions that  saw about 108 inmates being  feted with  special launch package of mini packs of rice from Papaye fast foods, drinks and water.

She further  urged philanthropists and organisations to support the needy in society.
