2025 AFCON: The unseen team sacrificing for the tournament
13th January 2026
Between the roar of the crowd and the drama on the pitch, another team is quietly at work across Morocco, playing its part in the success of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
While goals, stars and supporters dominate the headlines, cleaning workers have emerged as some of the tournament’s most overlooked contributors, operating far from the spotlight to ensure stadiums and public spaces remain clean, orderly and welcoming.
From Rabat to Tangier, the organisation of this year’s AFCON has been praised for its modern infrastructure, smooth coordination and vibrant fan experience. But behind the polished image lies the daily effort of men and women whose work helps reinforce Morocco’s reputation as a capable and respectful host of a major continental event.
Before, during and long after matches, cleaning teams move through stadiums, surrounding streets, fan zones and public squares. Their presence is most noticeable when the stands fall silent. As supporters drift away, celebrating or disappointed, these workers step in to prepare the venues for the next chapter of the tournament.
Working in small, coordinated groups, each person has a clearly defined role. Plastic bottles, paper, food containers and forgotten items are swiftly cleared from seats, corridors and steps. Their duties extend beyond the terraces to restrooms, media areas, platforms and even the outer perimeters of stadiums.
It is demanding work that requires stamina and discipline. Ahmed, a cleaner at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, described the reality of the job.
“Our match starts as soon as the fans leave,” he said. “We know the stadium must be in its best condition the next day. It’s a big responsibility, but being part of the success of this event makes us proud.”
Another worker spoke of the physical toll, especially after matches played before packed crowds, but said the satisfaction of seeing a spotless stadium the following morning makes the exhaustion worthwhile.
As dawn breaks, the atmosphere shifts. The noise and colour of the night before fade, leaving behind calm stands and quiet streets that show little sign of the emotions that filled them hours earlier. One by one, the workers leave without applause or ceremony, waiting for the next matchday when their work will begin again.
Major tournaments are often remembered for iconic goals, star players and unforgettable moments. But behind the scenes at AFCON 2025, there is another story of the women and men who work in the shadows, whose dedication allows Africa’s biggest football celebration to shine.
