Nigeria’s quest to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup took another hit on Tuesday night as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw against South Africa in Bloemfontein.
The Super Eagles endured a nightmare start when captain William Troost-Ekong bundled the ball into his own net after 25 minutes to gift the hosts the lead. Nigeria, however, drew level shortly before half-time when Calvin Bassey’s clumsy header ricocheted off his arm and past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, with the equaliser controversially allowed to stand.
A cagey second half produced few clear chances, leaving both sides to settle for a point — a result that suits Bafana Bafana far more than Nigeria.
The draw leaves Nigeria facing an uphill battle to qualify automatically. South Africa remain top of Group C, and for the Super Eagles to leapfrog them, they must not only win their final two fixtures against Lesotho and Benin, but also hope Hugo Broos’ side lose both of their remaining games against Zimbabwe and Rwanda. Even then, Nigeria would likely need to overturn a goal-difference deficit to secure top spot.
Injury concerns have compounded Nigeria’s troubles, with key figures Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, and Ola Aina all sidelined during this international break. Coach Finidi George will hope to have them back for October’s crunch fixtures, which now carry do-or-die stakes for Nigeria’s qualification dream.
