The Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) executive committee will hold an extraordinary meeting on 9 January to choose new hosts for the 2019 AFCON.

The continental body is in search for a new venue for the tournament after it stripped Cameroon of the hosting rights due to a lack of progress with preparations.

The new development overrules CAF’s earlier decision that a new host will be announced December 31.

Interested nations bidding for the biannual tournament still have until Friday, December 14 as bidding closes around 10pm GMT on the same day.

For now, South Africa and Morocco look the most likely to stage the tournament after the Egyptian FA announced last week that the country will not be going head to head with another Arab nation for the competition hosting right.

South Africa hosted the 2013 edition of the tournament after original hosts Libya opted out due to crisis in the country whilst Morocco, who were supposed to stage the 2015 edition also opted out due to the then Ebola scare.
