Afriyie Barnieh aims to revive his career with his new side FC Aarau after a frustrating stint at FC Zurich

Ghanaian international Daniel Afriyie Barnieh is aiming to relaunch his European career after signing a two-year deal with Swiss Challenge League side FC Aarau.

The 24-year-old forward joins on a free transfer following a mutual termination of his contract with top-tier club FC Zurich, where he endured a difficult 18-month spell that saw limited minutes and inconsistent impact.

Announcing the signing, Aarau sporting director Elsad Zverotić praised Barnieh’s pace and dynamism, underlining the club’s belief that the former Hearts of Oak star can play a pivotal role in their promotion campaign.

“Daniel is a quick, dynamic player and brings valuable experience from the Swiss Super League and the Ghanaian national team,” said Zverotić. “He will strengthen our attack and provide us with important options going forward.”

Barnieh arrived in Switzerland in January 2023 after rising to prominence in the Ghana Premier League, where he was instrumental in Hearts of Oak’s domestic double in 2021 and was widely regarded as one of the league’s brightest young talents. He also featured in Ghana’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, further raising his profile on the international stage.

However, his transition to European football proved challenging. At FC Zurich, Barnieh made 50 appearances across all competitions but scored just twice and registered four assists. While he showed flashes of promise, he struggled to secure a consistent starting role and often found himself on the fringes of the first team.

Despite those setbacks, Aarau believe they have secured a player capable of making a significant difference at the Challenge League level. Known for his versatility, Barnieh can operate across the front line, combining speed, technical skill, and positional intelligence.“This is a fresh start,” a source close to the player said. “He’s eager to prove what he can do with regular playing time and a system that suits his style.”

Barnieh’s move to Aarau reflects a growing trend among African players seeking stability and development in second-tier European leagues — particularly when top-flight opportunities are limited. The Swiss Challenge League
