Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has named Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Morocco as his top contenders for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite Nigeria’s recent heartbreak in World Cup qualification.

Speaking on the red carpet of the 2025 CAF Awards in Rabat, Gyan acknowledged Ghana’s absence from the tournament but expressed confidence in the strength of the continent’s elite teams.

“Ghana is out, which we are very disappointed about, but it is okay — we have qualified for the World Cup,” Gyan said. “Nigeria did well; they were close last two years. Ivory Coast did well, so we have a lot of teams… Morocco is also a strong contender. I will say these three countries — Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Morocco — are favourites.”

Nigeria, runners-up at the last AFCON in Ivory Coast, are still reeling from their shock defeat to DR Congo in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African play-offs. However, Gyan believes the Super Eagles’ squad depth and experience make them a serious threat in the continental championship.

The 35th edition of AFCON kicks off on December 21, 2025, and runs through January 18, 2026, with Morocco set to host the tournament.

Meanwhile, the CAF Awards ceremony also saw Achraf Hakimi crowned African Player of the Year, capping a stellar season with Paris Saint-Germain and further underlining Morocco’s growing stature in African football.
