Ghana’s Black Queens will make history on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, when they face England’s Lionesses for the first time at senior level in an international friendly at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton.

The fixture, part of England’s highly anticipated ‘Homecoming Series,’ offers Ghana’s women a rare opportunity to test themselves against one of the world’s most formidable sides.

The Queens hold a proud place in African football history, having become the first African women’s team to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1999. Since then, they have carried Ghana’s flag with distinction, producing legends such as Alberta Sackey, Adjoa Bayor, Portia Boakye, and Evelyn Badu.

While Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and South Africa have dominated much of the recent women’s football narrative on the continent, Ghana remains a trailblazer with ambitions of reclaiming its place among Africa’s elite.

The clash with the reigning European champions comes at a crucial time as Ghana works to rebuild its women’s football structure. With the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers looming, the Southampton test is seen as a vital measure of the team’s tactical depth, mental resilience, and international pedigree.

For the Black Queens, the match is more than a friendly—it is a statement of intent, a chance to showcase Ghanaian talent on a grand stage, and a reminder of the nation’s enduring legacy in women’s football.
