Black Stars job is not too big for Otto Addo - Ibrahim Tanko
21st November 2024
Former Black Stars assistant coach Ibrahim Tanko has voiced support for embattled Ghana head coach Otto Addo, calling for patience despite widespread calls for his dismissal.
Addo has faced significant criticism following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking the nation’s first absence in two decades.
The Black Stars finished at the bottom of their AFCON qualifying group, a disastrous campaign that has intensified scrutiny on Addo.
However, Ghana's two wins in the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers have kept their hopes alive, leaving Addo’s future hanging in the balance.
Tanko, speaking to Flashscore, dismissed claims that Addo is unfit for the role, emphasizing his achievements under challenging circumstances.
“I don’t believe the job is too big for him,” Tanko said. “He came in at a challenging time and took Ghana to the World Cup in Qatar.
Though the results weren’t as expected, he deserves another chance, especially with the World Cup qualifiers ahead.”
Tanko also highlighted the risks of dismissing Addo, including financial costs tied to his recently signed three-year contract and the uncertainty of finding a suitable replacement.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is set to deliberate Addo’s future during an Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.
The decision will come as the team prepares for critical World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025.
While fans demand accountability and swift changes, Tanko advocates for continuity, arguing that Addo's experience could still guide Ghana toward success in the World Cup qualifiers.
