Black Stars must secure wins against Sudan in AFCON qualifiers- Dr. Randy Abbey
4th October 2024
Dr. Randy Abbey, a member of the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has emphasized the importance of the Black Stars securing victories in their upcoming doubleheader against Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Ghana will face the Falcons on Friday, October 11, at the Accra Sports Stadium, followed by the return leg on Monday, October 14, at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya.
These matches come at a crucial juncture, as the Black Stars have had a shaky start to their qualifying campaign.
Ghana began their quest to qualify for AFCON 2025 with a disappointing 1-0 loss to Angola at Baba Yara Stadium, followed by a 1-1 draw against Niger in Berkane. As a result, the four-time African champions currently sit in third place with only one point.
Given the team's precarious position, Dr. Abbey highlighted that the upcoming matches against Sudan, coached by Kwesi Appiah, are critical to Ghana's chances of qualifying for the tournament in Morocco.
In an interview on Metro TV, he stressed the need for maximum effort to secure victory.
“It’s a must-win game," Dr. Abbey declared. "We have to do everything we can to win that game, we know the consequences if we don’t win. Once we have dealt with that, we will focus on the subsequent games."
Meanwhile, Black Stars head coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his squad for the matches later this week.
The results of these fixtures will significantly impact Ghana's road to AFCON 2025.
