The president of African football’s governing body, Patrice Motsepe, has led tributes following the death of a young Ghanaian footballer in what has been described as a shocking armed robbery attack.

Dominic Frimpong, a 20-year-old winger for Berekum Chelsea, was killed when the team’s bus was attacked while returning from a Ghana Premier League match. The incident has sent shockwaves through the country’s football community and beyond.

In a letter addressed to Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, president of the Ghana Football Association, Dr Motsepe said he was “profoundly saddened” by the news.

“It is with deep sorrow that I learned of the armed robbery attack on the bus of Berekum Chelsea… which claimed the life of Dominic Frimpong,” he said.

On behalf of the Confederation of African Football, Motsepe extended condolences to the player’s family, friends and teammates, as well as to Ghana’s football authorities. He also offered prayers and expressed solidarity with those affected.

The Ghana Football Association says it remains in close contact with the club and the Ghana Police Service as investigations continue.

There have been growing calls for swift action to bring those responsible to justice, amid concerns over the safety of teams travelling for domestic matches.

Frimpong’s death marks a tragic loss for Ghanaian football, with many remembering him as a promising young talent whose career was only just beginning.
