Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu made a return from a two month injury lay off by helping his team Newcastle United to a hard fought 1 nil victory  over champions league finalist Tottenham Hotspurs at their own back yard.

Atsu replaced French winger Allan Saint Maximin who joined Newcastle in the summer from Nice in the 17th minute after he was injured in the game.

The Ghanaian set up £40 m club record signing Joelington with a well timed through ball in the 27th minute to score what proved to be the winner for the Geordies.

This comes as a huge relief to under fire coach Steve Bruce who had lost all two opening games since replacing supporter's favourite Rafael Benitez in the summer first a 1 nil defeat to Arsenal and a 3-1 thrashing at newcomers Norwich.

Christian Atsu was sent home from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations due to a hamstring injury.

The 27-year-old sustained a sprain during the Black Stars goalless drawn game with Cameroon in Group F in July and had to miss pre-season with his new coach and team.

But a fit again Christian Atsu proved his worth to the magpies with an assist which worth weighs in gold and would be hugely appreciated by manager Steve Bruce.

Newcastle next play on Wednesday 28th August 2019, in the second round of the Carabao cup where they face Leicester City.
