The Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso and former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr Stephen Amoah, has credited Ghana’s ongoing economic stability efforts to the solid fiscal foundation laid by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during its time in office.
Speaking to JoyNews ahead of the 2026 Budget presentation in Parliament on Wednesday, Dr Amoah said Ghana’s fiscal challenges stem from a persistent gap between domestic revenue and expenditure.
He acknowledged the public’s concerns about high taxes but cautioned that any reduction must be matched with sustainable fiscal alternatives to avoid deepening the country’s debt burden.
“The amount of money we generate domestically is always far less than the amount that we expend. If you want to take away taxes, that’s fine — but give us an assurance that the fiscal space we are working within, considering our debt issues, can still support the economy sustainably,” he stated.
Dr Amoah emphasized the need to strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation to reduce Ghana’s dependence on external borrowing and ensure long-term economic independence.
He also argued that the NPP’s legacy of fiscal discipline and structural reforms has provided a strong base for the current government’s economic recovery efforts.
The 2026 Budget, expected to be presented later in the day, will reportedly focus on revenue mobilisation, debt sustainability, and job creation, as the government seeks to consolidate gains from the ongoing economic recovery programme.
