To resolve the prolonged impasse over the parliamentary election results in the Ablekuma North constituency, the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has announced a partial rerun of the polls in 19 out of 37 disputed polling stations.

The rerun is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025.

This move follows months of political deadlock between the two major parties—the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP)—over the outcome of the December 7, 2024, parliamentary elections.

Since then, the constituency has remained without parliamentary representation, as the final results could not be declared due to discrepancies in the collation process.

The core of the controversy stems from the destruction of physical pink sheets—official polling station result summaries—by party supporters who stormed the collation centre. Without the originals, the NPP submitted scanned copies of the pink sheets to facilitate collation.

The NDC, however, raised strong objections, claiming that their agents had not authenticated those scanned documents and insisting that all 37 polling stations be subjected to a fresh election.

The NPP has consistently held that the scanned results were valid, arguing that the NDC’s agents had already verified them at the time of submission.

The party maintained that only results from three outstanding polling stations should be added to declare a winner.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 2, the Electoral Commission disclosed that it had held two separate meetings with representatives from both parties—first on June 12 and again more recently—to chart a path forward.

Despite these engagements, the political camps held firmly to their original stances, leaving the EC to independently assess the available evidence.

The Commission’s findings revealed that of the 37 scanned pink sheets, only 18 had received direct confirmation from their respective presiding officers.

Given this verification and the fact that both party agents had signed off on those 18 results, the Commission ruled out a rerun in those polling stations.

“The Commission was able to secure the Presiding Officer’s verification and confirmation for 18 scanned polling station results. Agents of both parties also approved the same. A rerun will therefore not be held in those polling stations,” the EC clarified.

As a result, only the remaining 19 polling stations will undergo a rerun. The outcome of this vote is expected to determine who eventually represents Ablekuma North in Parliament.

The EC assured the public of its neutrality and commitment to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.

It has also called on the Ghana Police Service to ensure adequate security before, during, and after the rerun to guarantee a peaceful and credible exercise.
