Elvis Afriyie Ankrah calls for overhaul of Sports in Ghana after Black Stars' AFCON failure
27th November 2024
Former Youth and Sports Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has called for a complete overhaul of sports in Ghana following the Black Stars' failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This marks the first time in two decades that Ghana will not participate in the prestigious tournament, after finishing last in Group F with just three points from six matches.
In an interview with Channel One TV, Afriyie Ankrah expressed deep disappointment over the current state of sports in the country, particularly highlighting the poor treatment of the Black Stars during their recent qualifiers.
He was particularly disturbed by the hostile reaction from the crowd when Mohammed Kudus was about to take a penalty, describing the incident as "very, very sad." Afriyie Ankrah emphasized that the situation calls for a national reflection on the state of football and sports in Ghana.
"I’ve never seen anything like that," he remarked, stressing that it was time for the entire nation to take a closer look at the Black Stars and rethink the approach to sports. "We need to rethink everything—it’s time for a reset."
In response to the failure to qualify for AFCON 2025, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has dissolved the Black Stars' Management Committee.
The GFA's Executive Council is scheduled to meet today to discuss the future of head coach Otto Addo, with the nation eagerly awaiting decisions that could shape the future of Ghanaian football.
