English-born Ghanaian defender Terrel Agyemang has joined National League side Morecambe FC on a season-long loan from Middlesbrough.
The 22-year-old versatile player, who is comfortable both at right-back and in central midfield, becomes the Shrimps’ 14th signing of the summer following the club’s takeover by the Punjab Warriors, as manager Ashvir Singh Johal continues a major squad rebuild.
Johal, who has tracked Agyemang’s progress since his early days, believes his experience will prove invaluable:
“Terrel is someone I have known about for a long time when he was a young player at Charlton. He was bought by Manchester City and was part of the best U21 team in the country, winning the Premier League 2 title during his time there. He then joined Middlesbrough and gained first-team experience, while also playing in the National League and in Scotland,” Johal told the club’s media.
Agyemang began his career at Charlton Athletic before moving to Manchester City, where he won the Premier League 2 title in 2023. He later joined Middlesbrough, who loaned him to Hartlepool United for further senior experience.
Johal is confident the Ghanaian defender will fit seamlessly into his project at Morecambe:
“He is someone we identified as the right fit for the environment we are creating. He’s a hard worker with a fantastic personality, and we’re excited to see how he adapts to our style of play this season.”
Though born in England, Agyemang is eligible to represent Ghana at international level, and his consistent rise in English football could put him on the radar of the Black Stars selectors in the near future.
