Former Cote d'Ivoire coach Jean-Louis Gasset joins Marseille
20th February 2024
Former Ivory Coast manager Jean-Louis Gasset is poised to sign a four-month contract with French club Marseille, marking a swift return to coaching after his departure from the African Cup of Nations.
Gasset, who parted ways with Ivory Coast during the AFCON, will step into the role previously held by Gennaro Gattuso until the conclusion of the season.
Marseille is expected to explore long-term managerial options post-season, with Christophe Galtier being a prominent candidate.
Set to make his debut on the sidelines for Marseille's Thursday fixture against FC Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League, Gasset aims to guide the team to success in both continental and domestic competitions.
His immediate objectives include steering Marseille towards advancement in the Europa League and revitalizing their league performance.
Marseille currently lags behind in the race for European qualification, trailing by eight points.
Gasset's appointment marks Marseille's fourth managerial change this season, following Marcelino, Jacques Abardonado, and Gattuso.
Despite the disappointment of his Ivory Coast tenure, where he exited during the AFCON after a lacklustre group stage performance, Gasset is determined to make a positive impact with Marseille.
Under his guidance, Ivory Coast eventually triumphed in the tournament, led by his former assistant coach Emerse Faé, who has since been appointed as the permanent head coach of the national team.
