The Government of Ghana has denounced the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, branding it an illegal and unconstitutional act that poses a serious threat to democratic stability in the country.

In a statement released on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed strong disapproval of the coup, noting that it undermines the democratic process, especially in the wake of the peaceful presidential and parliamentary elections held on November 23.

Ghana conveyed its “grave concern and deep disappointment” over what it described as a reckless attempt to subvert the will of the people. The statement warned that the developments have dangerously disrupted Guinea-Bissau’s democratic path and stalled the official declaration of election results, which had been scheduled for November 27.

The government urged all key actors in Guinea-Bissau to uphold constitutional order and resolve any disputes arising from the elections through peaceful, transparent, and legally sanctioned channels.

Ghana also called for the safety and protection of all civilians and foreign nationals, with particular emphasis on members of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission currently in the country, stressing that their security and free movement must be guaranteed.

Furthermore, the government appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and avoid actions that could worsen the already tense situation.

Ghana reaffirmed its unwavering support for ECOWAS and the African Union as they work together to promote democracy, good governance, and the restoration of constitutional rule in the region.
