Ghana’s former football stars have taken a significant step towards securing greater recognition and welfare support after meeting the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams in Accra.

‎Representatives of the Retired Footballers Association of Ghana paid a courtesy call on the Minister on Wednesday, 25 February 2026, in a move aimed at strengthening collaboration between government and the country’s football greats.

The delegation, led by the association’s president, James Kuuku Daszie, included several distinguished former internationals who played key roles in shaping Ghana’s football history. They were welcomed at the Ministry’s conference room by Mr Adams and his team, with the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mrs Wilhelmina Asamoah, expressing optimism about closer cooperation in the future.

Addressing the meeting, Mr Daszie stressed the need for structured support systems to ensure retired players receive the recognition and assistance they deserve. He reflected on Ghana’s golden era in African football, highlighting the country’s Africa Cup of Nations triumphs in 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982, milestones that cemented the nation’s reputation as a continental powerhouse.

‎“We cannot speak of Ghana football without acknowledging the sacrifices and achievements of those who built its foundation,” he said, urging government to prioritise the welfare of retired athletes.

‎In response, Mr Adams acknowledged the pivotal role former players have played in shaping the nation’s sporting identity. He assured the delegation of government’s commitment to improving welfare schemes, including healthcare support and post-retirement opportunities.

‎The Minister also outlined plans for a dedicated Sports Fund that would cater not only for active sports development but also for the wellbeing of retired athletes. He further revealed intentions to institute annual commemorative events to celebrate past football heroes.

‎“The strength of a family is how well it is connected to the old,” Mr Adams remarked, calling for sustainable strategies that both honour the past and inspire future generations.

‎Members of the delegation included former stars such as Mohammed Polo, Abdul Razak and George Alhassan, among others.

‎The visit is being seen as a meaningful step towards safeguarding the legacy of Ghana’s football legends, ensuring that those who once carried the nation’s hopes on the pitch are not forgotten off it.
