The government has initiated the formal process to transfer ownership of the Damang Gold Mine from Gold Fields to Engineers and Planners, bringing months of public debate over the deal to a critical stage.

The transition is being overseen by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, who is leading a national team tasked with managing the handover and ensuring continuity of operations at the mine—one of Ghana’s most commercially significant gold assets.

Officials say the process is designed to ensure a smooth transfer, with key steps including verification of assets, review of operational systems, and compliance checks on environmental and labour obligations.

The move has, however, drawn scrutiny due to the ownership of Engineers and Planners, which is linked to a businessman who is a relative of President John Dramani Mahama.

Critics, particularly from the Minority in Parliament, have questioned the transparency of the arrangement and raised concerns about possible political influence.

Despite the criticism, government representatives insist that all legal and regulatory procedures are being strictly followed, maintaining that the transaction is in line with national interest and sector regulations.

The Damang Mine, previously operated by Gold Fields, remains a key contributor to Ghana’s gold production, and authorities say safeguarding its continued productivity is central to the transition process.
