Gov't introduces 20% salary incentive for teachers in rural areas

Deputy Minister for Education, Clement Apaak, has announced a 20% salary top-up for teachers who accept postings to rural and deprived communities across the country.

Dr Apaak made the disclosure during a courtesy call by top awardees of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), emphasizing the government’s commitment to reducing disparities within Ghana’s education system.

According to him, the initiative forms part of the government’s ‘Teacher Dabre’ Programme, which is aimed at encouraging qualified teachers to accept placements in hard-to-reach areas.

In addition to the financial incentive, beneficiaries will receive accommodation support.

He explained that the policy is intended to make rural postings more attractive, improve teacher retention in underserved communities, and ultimately enhance teaching and learning outcomes at the basic education level.

Dr Apaak noted that the measures were first announced by President John Dramani Mahama during the State of the Nation Address, as part of broader efforts to ensure that students in rural communities have equal opportunities to excel.

“The President has a program that is going to reward teachers who take teaching positions in rural areas. These teachers would get 20% on top of their gross salary as a form of motivation,” he stated.
