The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has officially rolled out full 24-hour operations at the Tema and Takoradi ports, in response to a presidential directive to establish a 24-hour economy in Ghana.

This significant operational shift expands continuous services beyond ship-side activities to include key terminals such as Terminal 2, the Transit Terminal, the Reefer Terminal, and the Golden Jubilee Terminal.

The initiative is designed to enhance cargo handling efficiency, reduce vessel turnaround times, and strengthen Ghana’s position as a leading maritime trade hub in West Africa.

The announcement was made during the inaugural National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving held at the Port of Tema. Speaking on behalf of GPHA Director-General Brigadier General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, the Director of Port of Tema, Tebon Zumah Esq., highlighted the Authority’s commitment to aligning its operations with national economic priorities.

“While ship-side operations have long been run on a 24-hour basis, this directive challenges us to extend that same level of commitment to shore-handling and allied port services,” Mr. Zumah said.

He urged GPHA staff to embrace innovation and proactive service delivery, describing the move as a bold step toward national development and economic efficiency.

In a symbolic gesture at the event, Mr. Zumah officially declared the Port of Tema a fully operational 24-hour facility—signifying GPHA’s dedication to service excellence and economic transformation.

The event, themed “Reflect, Reset, and Renew for National Prosperity”, brought together GPHA leadership, staff, and clergy for a time of spiritual reflection. The ceremony featured scripture readings, intercessory prayers, and thanksgiving hymns, blending faith with a call to national purpose.

As the GPHA advances its commitment to government policy, the full-scale implementation of 24-hour operations at both Tema and Takoradi ports is expected to facilitate smoother trade, attract investment, and accelerate Ghana’s broader economic ambitions.
