The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has suspended plans to increase transport fares following recent government measures aimed at reducing fuel prices.

According to the Union’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, the decision comes after assurances from John Dramani Mahama that steps have been taken to ease the cost of fuel.

Speaking on Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM, Mr Amoah explained that transport operators will maintain current fares for now while closely monitoring developments in the fuel pricing regime.

He noted that the Union had initially considered a fare increment but decided to hold off in response to the president’s commitment to reducing fuel prices.

Government recently announced it would absorb GH¢2.00 per litre on diesel and GH¢0.36 per litre on petrol for a one-month period, starting April 16, 2026. The intervention is intended to cushion consumers against rising global petroleum prices.
