The Institute of Fiscal Studies is asking government to outsource the collection of revenue from the Informal Sector to private companies to help boost revenue mobilization.

It also wants government to leverage on the use of Information Communication technology to facilitate the move. The Institute believes this could help improve revenue collection in the country.

The proposal form part of Institute’s Economic Policy Priorities for the New Government. Executive Director of IFS Professor Newman Kusi wants government to kick start the process by identifying business associations in the informal sector and contract a consultant to register such businesses for the process.

He is also optimistic government can reduce wasteful, irregular and unbudgeted expenditures in the public sector to save the public purse through the effective implementation of the Public Financial Management Act.

The IFS also called for the strengthening of tax administration through the modernization and greater automation of collections and reinforcement.
