Ignore NDC; Jean Mensa's appointment apt - Ayariga lauds Akufo-Addo
25th July 2018
Founder and Leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga has endorsed the President’s nomination of Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensa as chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
President Akufo-Addo on Monday nominated the Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs for the vacant position of the chairperson of the electoral commission after Charlotte Osei and two of her deputies were removed from the commission.
The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has contested the nomination of Jean Mensa for the position of the new Electoral Commission Chairperson.
A statement issued by the NDC and signed by the General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said the party was shocked to learn that the President has appointed “a known pro-NPP and an avowed anti-NDC person” to head the Election Management Body(EMB) despite his earlier assurances given to Ghanaians that he would replace the dismissed EC chairperson with someone whose integrity and political neutrality would be above board.
The NDC however said, the party will shortly tender material evidence that shows the open and covert activities of Jean Mensa, which makes her unfit to occupy the high position of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of the republic of Ghana.
Speaking in an interview on Accra based radio station, Kasapa FM, Dr. Hassan Ayariga said the choice of Mrs. Jean Mensa by the president is the best and that the APC finds nothing wrong with her nomination.
“As at now, from the little thing and interactions that I have had with her, I think for now, she is the best person for the job, she can do the job; we just hope that. People have challenges when they are given positions, some become arrogant, some become complacent and some become certain way and that’s why am hoping and praying that she doesn’t change her attitude,” he said.
According to him, the brouhaha by the opposition National Democratic Congress against her nomination and allegations of Jean Mensa being a pro-NPP is neither here nor there.
“I hear people in the NDC campaigning making a whole noise that Madam Jean Mensa is from NPP and all that does not matter, whether you like it or not, put anybody there, and somebody will have a problem with that person” he added.
