It will be the most unwise decision for the NPP not to retain Dr. Bawumia for 2028 - Asenso Boakye
27th January 2026
Member of Parliament for Bantama and former Minister for Roads, Francis Asenso Boakye has urged members of the NPP not to entertain making a grave mistake of not retaining former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer of the NPP.
Addressing delegates and members of the NPP in Bantama yesterday, the MP said considering Bawumia's good character traits, popularity and his enormous experience in governance, it will be a grave mistake for the NPP not to retain him as flagbearer.
"It will be the most unwise decision for the NPP not to retain Dr. Bawumia to lead the NPP to the 2028 election," Asenso Boakye said.
Citing reasons why Dr. Bawumia ought be retained as flagbearer, the MP said following the party's defeat in the 2024 election, some people who were interested in leading the party started blaming Bawumia for the defeat. However, he said, the party's official inquiry into reasons for the defeat, as well as a number of independent inquiries into same, did not fault Bawumia for the defeat.
"When you're looking for someone with great intellect, wisdom, humility, experience and a man with great vision which will propel Ghana to greater heights for prosperity and development, it is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia," Asenso Boakye said.
"Inspite of all these credentials, some people were saying that we should not present him again because he was responsible for our defeat and he cannot win. However, all research works into why the NPP lost the 2024 election, none of it, including those by independent researchers, blamed Dr. Bawumia."
"Notwithstanding all these, some of the aspirants are still going round spreading all manner of lies against him," Asenso Boakye said and urged delegates to disregard such lies.
The former Minister added that having visited a number of places in the country and listened to a number of party members in the country, Bawumia is highly favoured by members of the party.
He therefore urged the delegates who will be be voting on Saturday to rally behind Dr. Bawumia and vote for him to lead the victory in 2028.
