Special Aide to President-elect John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has called for the resignation of Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa, citing incompetence and partisanship within the Commission.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One Television, Ms Mogtari criticized the EC’s handling of the 2024 elections.

She blamed the violence recorded during the polls on the Commission’s delays in releasing official results.

“I expected the EC Chairperson to resign immediately after the election. The Commission has been incompetent, to say the least. Their delays and partisanship caused unnecessary tension and violence. By the time we went to bed, we all knew the results, even the main opponent had conceded. What were they waiting for?” she stated.

She also highlighted issues with the ballot sheets, some of which were destroyed due to “elementary mistakes,” and commended the NDC’s technical team for ensuring accountability during the process.

On whether Jean Mensa should resign, Mogtari was unequivocal: “If I were in her position, I would have resigned. Her tenure has been marked by prejudice and bias against the NDC. It is clear that the EC requires a complete reset to restore its integrity and credibility.”

Joyce Bawa revealed that, the incoming Mahama administration plans to prioritize comprehensive reforms at the Electoral Commission as part of broader constitutional amendments.

“We need to depoliticize the EC and remove partisan influences. Jean Mensa has shown a clear bias, and she should step down out of respect for the office she holds,” she added.
