Ghana head coach Otto Addo has defended his decision to include Nations FC defender Razak Simpson in the squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger, calling it a strategic and well-founded move.

Simpson’s call-up was met with widespread support from fans and analysts, who recognized the defender’s impressive performances in the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

Prominent figures within the GPL community have pointed to Simpson as one of the standout centre-backs in the current league season, affirming Addo’s choice.

Commenting on Simpson’s selection, Addo highlighted the rigorous scouting process that led to the player’s inclusion and praised his qualities on the pitch.

“For me, again, it's not about local players or non-local players. It's about performance,” Addo stated.

“You’re right, he did well. I saw him at Nations. I’ve been going around Ghana to watch matches, and he’s one of the players who caught my eye.

I think he justified his selection in the last game and I hope he will continue,” Addo added.

Simpson, one of six home-based players in the current Black Stars squad, brings notable physicality and aerial strength to the team.

His imposing presence has been a valuable addition to Ghana’s defensive lineup, filling a gap often seen in the top flight where tall centre-backs are a rarity.

The Black Stars will take on Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium today, November 18, with kickoff set for 16:00 GMT.

The team is aiming to end their qualifying campaign on a high note after drawing 1-1 with Angola in their previous match, which ended their hopes of securing an AFCON spot in this round.
