Prince Tagoe questions Mohammed Kudus’ captaincy in Black Stars’ draw against Sudan

Former Ghana international Prince Tagoe has voiced concerns over the decision to hand the captain's armband to Mohammed Kudus during the Black Stars’ recent goalless draw against Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Kudus, the West Ham United midfielder, was given the responsibility in the absence of regular captains Andre Ayew and Thomas Partey.
However, despite Ghana dominating possession, the game ended in a frustrating 0-0 draw at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
In an interview with Bryt FM, Tagoe questioned the decision to appoint Kudus as captain, suggesting that Jordan Ayew would have been a more appropriate choice.
“I don’t know who decided to give Mohammed Kudus the captaincy armband. We don’t need to rush him into such a role.
He is one of our future stars, and we should let him grow without adding unnecessary pressure. Our captaincy system should be more structured,” Tagoe said.
Tagoe expressed concerns about the potential impact of such decisions on team dynamics, warning that captaincy mismanagement could breed “hatred and jealousy” within the squad.
He reflected on past leadership choices, adding, “We’ve made similar mistakes before. Muntari and Essien were overlooked, and the captaincy was handed to Asamoah Gyan. We must follow proper principles to avoid confusion.”
As Ghana prepares for the return leg against Sudan in Tripoli, Libya, the Black Stars are under pressure to secure a positive result to keep their AFCON 2025 qualification hopes alive.
Head coach Otto Addo and his team will need a much-improved performance to reignite their campaign.
