Slogan winners hail unifying impact of expanded format

Abu Dhabi: ‘Bringing Asia Together’ has become synonymous with the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 and for the tournament’s slogan contest winners, the sight of the three words emblazoned all across the United Arab Emirates has brought about great joy and honour.
Joint slogan contest winners – Jalal Nakhaie and Scott Sommerville - were rewarded with a pair of an all-expenses paid trip to witness Saturday’s grand opening ceremony, which saw hosts UAE held to a 1-1 draw against Bahrain in a tightly contested Group A opener.
“Just making my way from the airport to the hotel, to see Bringing Asia Together everywhere is an indescribable feeling, I am completely overjoyed,” said Nakhaie who was born in the Islamic Republic of Iran but now resides in Australia.
Sommerville, a Northern Ireland native but has called Vietnam home for the last 13 years, added: “It is really a surreal experience to see the slogan on national buildings and at the stadium.”
The pair may be born in different Continents and hail from different parts of the world, but both Nakhaie and Sommerville were unanimous in hailing the tournament’s expansion from 16 to 24 teams as the impetus for their slogan proposals during the contest which was launched in October 2017.
“The extended number of counties was the motivation behind my proposal. There is no doubt that this AFC Asian Cup in the UAE, is truly a gathering of different cultures, races and languages,” said Nakhaie.
“Millions of people across the world are watching and clearly Asia's heart is beating in the UAE. ‘Bringing Asia Together’ is the best way to describe this historic moment. My hope is to see the tournament forge greater friendships between all countries and that to me is the power that football holds.”
Affirming the sentiments of his fellow contest winner, Sommerville added: “It had to be simple, but evocative - whilst representing what the tournament represents; it literally brings players, teams and fans of all nations together. And also, Asia is massive and sometimes we forget the diversity of the Continent.”
For Nakhaie, the journey to the UAE has provided some comfort and solace. Since winning the contest twelve months ago, he has successfully battled cancer and despite his life changing ordeal, his motivations to be a part of Asia’s crown jewel was never in doubt.
“The moment I was informed I won, the first thing I did was to make arrangements for my son to join me and my wife. I was determined not to let my illness affect my life or to miss this opportunity. It was a magical moment for me, not only because I am a football fan, but to enjoy this experience as a family is truly priceless.
“My message to everyone, to all the teams, is to keep trying and never lose hope. The future is always bright if you persevere. I will cherish this experience for many years to come and I want to thank the AFC for giving us this opportunity.”
