Switching to the NPP cost me 'By the Fire Side' – Maame Dokono

Veteran Ghanaian actress, Grace Omaboe also known as Maame Dokono, has revealed how a switch in political parties from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led to the end of her television show ‘By the Fire Side’.
In a one-on-one interview on GTV, Maame Dokono mentioned she became active in politics and joined the NDC during the reign of the late Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings.
According to her, during the time she was a member of the NDC, she became friends with former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang, and she assisted her in many ways including supporting her with logistics for her Show ‘By the Fire Side.’
Maame Dokono revealed that briefly after she joined the NPP, the former first lady withdrew her sponsor and support for the show leading to its termination.
She said, “NPP was doing a programme in the Central Region, and a lot of the artistes were behind Nana. We were singing and doing other things. Sometimes before Nana mounts the speech, I address the crowd and I had so much support then. So, they asked me to join the NPP and I did.”
She continued, “Because of the switch in political parties, she took everything from me. You know she was the one sponsoring ‘By the Fireside’. She gave me a van, the camera, but as soon as this change came, she took everything.”
Maame Dokono said she least expected her move to join the NPP would end her friendship with Nana Konadu Agyemang.
She said, “I thought because I was going to that side to push for women, it was not going to be a problem, but it really turned our relationship bitter.”
