UEFA considers voting to suspend Israel from engaging in club and national competitions
26th September 2025
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is reportedly preparing to vote on suspending Israel from European club and national competitions, following mounting pressure from UN experts, civil society groups, and human rights advocates in the wake of the Gaza conflict.
According to The Times, a majority of UEFA’s executive committee is expected to support the motion, which could be formalized next week. The push follows a UN commission’s conclusion that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, prompting calls for action from both FIFA and UEFA.
UEFA previously suspended Russia from all competitions in 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine. Critics argue that continued participation by Israeli teams undermines UEFA’s credibility and consistency in responding to grave human rights violations.
While UEFA and FIFA have not publicly endorsed the suspension, internal discussions are reportedly underway. Sky News notes that no final decision has been taken, but protests across Europe and UN admonitions have intensified scrutiny.
If UEFA proceeds:
- Israeli clubs could be excluded from European competitions such as the Champions League and Europa League.
- The Israeli national team may face suspension from UEFA tournaments, including Euro qualifiers.
- FIFA may be forced to clarify its stance, especially with Israel still active in World Cup qualification matches.
