Head coach of the Ghana national football team, Otto Addo, has welcomed Derrick Kohn’s decision to represent Ghana, describing the defender as a valuable addition ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

‎Kohn, who was born in Hamburg, switched his international allegiance from Germany to Ghana in November 2025 and made his debut in a 2-0 defeat to Japan national football team during the Kirin Cup.

‎The 27-year-old has been included in Ghana’s squad for upcoming friendlies against the Austria national football team and Germany national football team.

‎“We are happy that he has chosen Ghana,” Addo said, noting that Kohn made a strong impression during his first appearances for the national team.

‎“He has a very good chance of being at the World Cup,” he added.

‎Kohn’s versatility is seen as a key asset, with the defender capable of operating in multiple roles on the left side. Currently playing for Union Berlin under coach Steffen Baumgart, he has featured regularly as a wing-back this season, making 25 league appearances.

‎Addo believes that flexibility could prove crucial as Ghana fine-tune their tactical approach ahead of the tournament.

‎“We have many good wingers. But it depends on the opponent and the situation; we are flexible,” he explained.

‎The Ghana coach also praised Kohn’s development at club level, highlighting his contribution to Union Berlin’s stable campaign.

‎“His development at Union Berlin is very good… Overall, it’s been a good season and things are moving in the right direction,” Addo said.

‎With competition for places intensifying, Kohn’s form and adaptability could make him a key figure as the Black Stars prepare for football’s biggest stage in North America.
