We’re ready to accept TIN for MoMo registration – MTN
26th October 2018
The management of Ghana’s biggest telecommunications network MTN Ghana, say they are ready to accept the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Tax Identification Number (TIN), as part of compulsory requirements for the registration of sim cards and mobile money services.
The Tax Identification Number policy has been one of the new mechanisms adopted by the GRA to rope in as many taxpayers as possible.
As part of enforcement, one cannot access passport, driver’s license, open a new bank account or register a business without a TIN.
As of April 2018, the Authority had issued over one million TIN numbers to Ghanaians, with the Commissioner-General confirming that there have been an additional ninety thousand issuances some five months ago.
In an interview with Citi News on the sidelines of a stakeholders conference in Koforidua, the Corporate Services Executive of MTN Ghana, Sam Koranteng, indicated that his organization is ready to accept TIN if regulatory bodies make it a requirement for the telecommunications industry.
“MTN has been a good corporate citizen, law-abiding business, and whenever there are any laws or regulations that impact our industry, we ensure that we comply, and also engage the regulatory agencies when we have issues with them”.
“If government should say today that we want you to add the Tax Identification Number as a requirement in registering new people onto our network or the regulatory bodies ask us to include the TIN for mobile money processes or transactions, we at MTN are ever ready to collaborate with them to try as much as possible to ensure that we give the best services to our customers and Ghanaians as a whole, whiles we continue to remain a responsible corporate entity”.
Mr. Sam Koranteng added that, “It seems the tax identification number has come to stay, and I agree we may get to a stage in the country where the TIN will be used for every transaction and for this reason I want to assure our cherished customers and Ghanaians that MTN Ghana will be very ready when the time comes”.
