The Special Operations Team of the Ghana Police Service has arrested 32 suspected criminals and seized large quantities of suspected narcotics during a high-impact, intelligence-driven operation in the Tamale Metropolis on Monday, December 1.

The operation, which targeted robbery, drug trafficking and other violent crimes, also resulted in the death of one armed suspect who allegedly opened fire on officers.

The security exercise was led by ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil, whose team began the mission with a courtesy call on the leadership of Masjidul Bayan, where they formally informed Sheikh Basha of their presence and sought prayers for a successful operation.

Addressing the gathering, ASP Jalil stated that the team’s mandate was to clamp down on crimes including armed robbery, attacks on mobile money vendors, rape, illicit drug use and trafficking, as well as other threats to national security.

Sheikh Basha praised the Police Service for its commitment to protecting lives and property and assured the officers of continuous prayers for the Inspector General of Police, the President and all security agencies.

Drug Dens Busted in Sanzhirigu and Aboabo Forest

Following the visit, the team proceeded to Sanzhirigu, where intelligence suggested a house was being used as a base for drug sales and consumption. Five suspects were arrested at the location, while dried substances suspected to be Indian hemp and bottles of Koffex cough syrup were retrieved.

The operation later shifted to the Aboabo Forest enclave, a known hideout for criminal gangs involved in robbery and drug trafficking. A large-scale swoop led to the arrest of 27 additional suspects. Officers also seized suspected narcotic substances, opioid tablets, six motorbikes and three mobile phones believed to be stolen.

Gun Battle Leaves One Suspect Dead

The operation turned violent when a group of armed men reportedly confronted the police and opened fire without provocation. Officers returned fire in what police described as a legitimate act of self-defence.

One suspect was hit during the exchange and was rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

ASP Jalil confirmed that intelligence reports had indicated the suspects were well-armed and prepared to resist arrest, making the police response necessary to avert further danger.

“The officers acted with professionalism under extremely dangerous conditions and successfully prevented harm to innocent residents,” he stated.

Suspects in Custody, Operations to Continue

All 32 suspects are currently being detained at the District Charge Office and the Sakasaka Police Station to assist with investigations. The seized drugs have been submitted for forensic testing, while the recovered motorbikes and phones remain in police custody as exhibits.

The Special Operations Team, made up of 50 officers and eight service vehicles, including a Black Maria, is expected to maintain its presence in the metropolis as part of sustained efforts to curb the rising wave of violent crime in the Northern Region.
