Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has touched down in Latvia for a two-day official mission focused on unraveling the circumstances surrounding the death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia.

In a social media update on Monday, the Minister explained that the trip fulfils his pledge to personally engage Latvian authorities over the unresolved case involving the Riga Technical University student.

He revealed that Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Baiba Braže, formally received him, after which both sides held extensive talks on cooperation toward establishing the facts.

Mr Ablakwa said the Latvian government has given firm assurances of its readiness to work closely with Ghana to ensure transparency and accountability in the investigations.

He is heading a six-member team comprising senior Foreign Affairs officials alongside forensic and medical experts to support the process. Two relatives of the deceased, who were initially unable to travel due to visa delays, have now secured approval and are expected to join the delegation.

The Minister stressed that the government is covering all expenses related to the mission, including those of the family and technical experts. He firmly rejected online claims suggesting demands for money, fabricated travel documents or extortion, describing them as completely unfounded.

As part of the visit, the delegation is scheduled to hold further meetings with Latvian officials from key ministries as well as investigators handling the case.

The trip comes shortly after the Foreign Affairs Ministry issued a statement debunking allegations that it had requested funds from the bereaved family, explaining that earlier delays were purely administrative visa issues.

Mr Ablakwa reaffirmed Ghana’s resolve to safeguard its citizens abroad and pursue justice without compromise, noting that the Ministry remains fully committed to uncovering the truth behind Nana Agyei Ahyia’s death.
