The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has firmly rejected allegations circulating online regarding its handling of efforts to seek justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who died under unresolved circumstances in Latvia, describing the claims as inaccurate and misleading.

In a statement issued on February 2, 2026, the Ministry said it has maintained constant engagement with the bereaved family and has never requested any financial contribution from them to support official travel or investigative processes in Europe.

The response comes after a viral video in which a woman identifying herself as the deceased student’s sister accused government officials of demanding money, travelling without family representatives, and issuing what she described as a fake airline ticket to their mother.

The Ministry dismissed those assertions, stressing that government has fully covered travel arrangements for two nominated family members as well as a pathologist to accompany the delegation to Latvia in support of ongoing investigations.

It clarified that no payments were ever requested or received from the family and that delays in the trip, initially planned for January 31, 2026, resulted from visa processing issues and the late submission of required documents by the relatives.

According to the statement, once the outstanding paperwork was provided, the Ministry immediately facilitated its transmission to the relevant embassy to expedite the process.

Addressing claims about the deceased’s mother appearing at the airport with bloggers, the Ministry explained that the document she carried was not a confirmed flight ticket but a provisional itinerary generated solely to meet visa application requirements.

The Ministry expressed concern over what it described as the reckless spread of misinformation on such a sensitive matter, warning that distortions of fact undermine both the investigative process and public trust.

Nana Agyei Ahyia, a student of Riga Technical University, died in Latvia under circumstances that have triggered widespread concern and calls for accountability. The Ministry assured the public that it remains actively engaged with Latvian authorities and relevant institutions to uncover the truth surrounding his death.

Reaffirming its mandate, the Ministry pledged its continued commitment to protecting Ghanaians abroad and to ensuring justice for the deceased, urging the public to rely on official updates and allow diplomatic channels to carry out their work.
