Political data expert and Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, Mussa Dankwa, has identified Dr Bryan Acheampong’s unexpected triumph in the Volta Region as the standout twist in the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries.
Contributing to discussions on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr Dankwa described the internal elections as generally well managed and peaceful, but admitted that Acheampong’s ability to secure victory in a region traditionally difficult for the party defied most forecasts.
He explained that while much of the nationwide results followed anticipated patterns, the Volta outcome represented a significant departure from historical voting behaviour within the party’s delegate base.
Mr Dankwa further noted that Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s showing was far weaker than projected, even under pessimistic scenarios. He suggested that controversies and events that unfolded shortly before voting day likely damaged the former MP’s momentum and affected delegate confidence.
Reflecting on the broader race, the pollster said Dr Mahamudu Bawumia executed a highly organised and consistent campaign, which translated into dominant support across many constituencies — a result that aligned closely with pre-election indicators.
Turning to Acheampong’s growing appeal, Mr Dankwa observed that the former Agric Minister successfully positioned himself as a new force within the party, offering reform-driven ideas that resonated strongly with delegates seeking change.
He added that Acheampong’s generational appeal also worked in his favour, as many party members appeared ready to rally behind younger leadership capable of renewing the NPP’s political energy.
In summary, while the primaries largely confirmed existing trends, Mr Dankwa stressed that Acheampong’s breakthrough in Volta and Agyapong’s underperformance will be remembered as the election’s most defining surprises.
