Former vice president of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie, has rejected attempts to hold GFA president Kurt Okraku solely responsible for the crisis surrounding Hohoe United, following the club’s withdrawal from the Ghana Premier League.

‎Hohoe United announced their exit from the 2025/26 season on April 1, citing systemic challenges and what they described as unfair treatment. However, Afriyie insists the situation is more complex, pointing to structural issues involving both the club and the governing body.

‎“What has happened to Hohoe United is not linked to Kurt Okraku. We are not being fair to him,” Afriyie told Asempa FM. “The real problem lies with the club owners, and the FA itself is complicit.”

‎He criticised what he described as inconsistencies in the FA’s disciplinary system, arguing that repeated breaches are not being met with stronger sanctions as stipulated by the rules.

‎“Under our own regulations, repeated offences should attract stiffer punishment,” he said. “But I can show you instances where even after multiple breaches, the sanctions remain almost the same.”

‎Afriyie’s comments come as scrutiny grows over governance and fairness in the domestic game, particularly after Hohoe United’s dramatic withdrawal while battling relegation.

‎At the time of their exit, the Kpando-based side had 30 points from 27 matches and faced a challenging run-in, with six of their remaining seven fixtures scheduled away from their home ground.

‎Club officials have argued that such conditions severely undermined their chances of survival, but Afriyie maintains that the broader issue lies in systemic weaknesses rather than individual leadership.

‎The development has intensified debate over how the GFA manages the league, with calls for reforms to ensure consistency, fairness and stronger enforcement of its own regulations.
