AZ Alkmaar has surprised many with their decision to prioritize youth over experience in the goalkeeping department, choosing to develop young talent rather than rely solely on seasoned professionals.

Sporting Director Max Huiberts confirmed that Dutch-born Ghanaian Rome Jayden Owusu-Oduro will be the team's first-choice goalkeeper for the upcoming season, despite the recent arrival of veteran Jeroen Zoet.

Owusu-Oduro's journey began at DVC Buiksloot before he joined the AZ Alkmaar youth system at the under-12 level. His dedication and progression within the club led to his first professional contract in October 2020.

The 20-year-old has since gained valuable experience in both the Eerste Divisie and the UEFA Europa Conference League.

While acknowledging Zoet's vast experience of nearly 400 professional matches, Huiberts emphasized the club's confidence in Owusu-Oduro's potential:

"After Maty's departure, Rome-Jayden gets the chance as the first goalkeeper. We have a lot of confidence in each other about that."

Zoet's presence is not seen as a threat but rather a positive influence. "It is nice to have Jeroen behind him," commented Huiberts. "At the age of 33, he is still very fit and would like to be of value in the role as discussed."

Huiberts also highlighted Zoet's commitment to improvement and his supportive role: "Jeroen is on the field every day to improve and he is eager to pursue his ambitions.

In his role, he will keep the competition sharp and try to make each other stronger."

This decision reflects AZ Alkmaar's commitment to fostering young talent while strategically integrating experienced players.

Owusu-Oduro will have the opportunity to prove himself as the starting goalkeeper, with Zoet providing valuable support and healthy competition.
