Hundreds of residents in the Brong Ahafo Regional capital, Sunyani, lined the streets to welcome the regional minister-nominee, Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh when he visited on Thursday, a day after the President named him to serve in that office.

The supporters, most of whom were clad in party paraphernalia, sang and danced as the minister-nominee drove through some principal streets in the town.

The procession started from Bechem in the Tano South constituency, through Duaya-Nkwanta to the Sunyani municipality.

The teeming supporters gathered at the forecourt of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) office in the Sunyani East constituency, where Mr Asomah-Cheremeh addressed them.

President Akufo-Addo last Tuesday, January 24, 2017, named Mr. Asomah-Cheremeh as one of the 10 regional ministers he had nominated to serve in his government.

Nana Addo announced that the former Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman of the NPP would serve as a minister for the region.

‘Chiefs kick against Asomah-Cheremeh’s nomination’

The Sunyani Traditional Council on Thursday [January 26], kicked against the nomination of Mr Asomah-Cheremeh as the Brong Ahafo regional minister.

According to them, he disrespected the traditional authority in the run-up to the 2016 elections.

The nominee is reported to have said the Paramount Chief of the Sunyani Traditional Council, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri, “stooped to the lowest level to call on residents of the region to endorse the Presidency of Mahama. What we find appalling and unbelievable is the fact that a 10-kilometre stretch of uncompleted road could induce a chief of his standing to promise 70 to 80 percent victory in the region for the President.”

The chiefs, at a press conference on Thursday said, although they are not calling for his withdrawal from the assignment, they are declaring their position that they cannot work with him.
