The Ministry of the Interior has officially designated Friday, March 6, 2026, as a statutory public holiday to celebrate Ghana’s Independence Day.
In a statement released on March 2, 2026, Sector Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak called on citizens nationwide to observe the occasion with due regard for its national significance.
Independence Day commemorates Ghana’s historic liberation from colonial rule on March 6, 1957, making it the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve self-governance.
Annual celebrations typically feature vibrant parades, cultural exhibitions, and official ceremonies that include schoolchildren, security personnel, and government officials. The festivities provide an opportunity for the nation to reflect on its rich history, accomplishments, and ongoing development.
The Ministry urged Ghanaians to participate in the events and honor the country’s sovereignty and national identity.
